2026!!!

2026!!!
Little blast from the past back in the day, from my first time in Afghanistan way back in 2009 (I think), probably not long after Christmas come to think of it! ATVs were a great form of mobility in Afghanistan, and what's better than an ATV with a minigun on it??!! Ho-Ho-Ho now I have a machinegun!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As we get ready to dive into 2026 we're going to be focusing on hand to hand and blade training here at the range. January will be our hand-to-hand block of the modular training concept, and, after a brief hiatus for some medical issues, we are bringing back Marc Denny of Dog Brothers Martial arts for his monthly seminar. for those unfamiliar with the Modular Training Concept (MTC), that is our 6-month training cycle where we cover Pistol, Rifle, unarmed (and blade) self protection, Combative integration (integrating pistols and knives into the unarmed skill set, or visa/versa), and single operator structure clearing. We are offering the MTC classes twice per month, from 8;00AM to 12:00PM, concentrating on one subject per month. So far for this year the schedule looks like this:

10 January: Hand-to-Hand and Blade Part 1

24 January: Hand-to-Hand and Blade Part 2

Meanwhile, in addition to our Modular Training Concept, Marc Denny of Dog Brothers Martial Arts fame is back to doing his monthly seminars out here at the range. The below is some content from the man himself on how he came to be in North Carolina, and at 37 PSR. Enjoy!

Greetings everyone:

Now that I am far enough along recovering from my hip replacement surgery, it is time to start up our monthly DBMA Combatives class once again.

I've conferred with Dan and he confirms that Saturday January 31st at 13:00 is a go.

It occurs to me that many of the members here at  37 PSR and visitors may not be familiar with my background and how I came to be part of the PSR family.

I was born and raised in New York City during an era when street violence was very real.  In my case this included being jumped by three heroin users on the stairs at school and being hunted by junkies on subway platforms late at night, and various other mugging type incidents.  These incidents culminated deep in southern Mexico when a Mexican friend and I wound up in the Chiapas State prison for three days after fighting off four guys who looked to drag off one of the two American girls we were escorting.

This led my taking up serious martial arts training-- with the weaponry oriented Filipino Martial Art of Kali at its core-- with some extraordinary teachers to solve the kind of problems I had experienced.

My friend Eric and I formed a fight club group that came to be known as "the Dog Brothers".   We have been the subject of various documentaries e.g. National Geographic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOjvz1uFUYM&t=170s but if you don't have the 45 minutes for that here is a fun highlight clip   Dog Brothers Full Contact Stick Fighting - YouTube

In 1990 (three years before the UFC) I discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and when SEAL Team 6 invited us in 1991 during the run up to the Gulf War to work with them we brought along my BJJ teacher Rigan Machado for their first exposure to the then unknown BJJ.

Our early connection with BJJ put us on the radar screen of the UFC in its violent eight-men-enter-one-man-leaves heyday in the mid 90s and they approached us to be a special event between the semi-finals and the finals, but upon seeing what we do they turned us down for being "just too extreme" https://dogbrothers.com/ufc-letter/

In the late 1990s I had an interesting interaction with a prison killer,  I blended the insights gleaned therefrom into the outstanding anti-knife material of Kali that I now call "Die Less Often-- the interface of gun, knife, and empty hand.   Word of this material spread and I have taught into to many law enforcement agencies -- including US Border Patrol, for whom I am a Subject Matter Expert in Intermediate Force- going up and down the force continuum.

All this has led to other opportunities-- including:
*Level 3 Modern Army Combatives Instructor (Matt Larsen)
*5th Group Special Forces
*10th Group Special Forces

It was in performance of one such contract at 37 PSR with a military intel unit going somewhere dangerous without guns that I met Frankie McRae.   We stayed in touch over the years, and when my wife and I became fed up with California in 2020 Frankie suggested I move out here and begin teaching at the range while working on my firearms skills.

And that is the story of how I came to 37 PSR.

The class is a fun mix of empty hand, knife, anti-knife, and sticks/clubs.  It is designed for all levels be you young stud or more towards the geriatric end of the spectrum.  In coordination with the firearms training here at 37 PSR, it is ideal for those concerned about the possibility of having to deal with scurrilous characters in the parking lot coming out of a store or at the pumps at a gas station.

And finally, for your viewing pleasure: some cool stick fighting stuff to get everyone in the mood for January!

Merry Christmas, and we'll see you in the new year!
